A guilty habit: from time to time, I browse profiles on BlackVoices and occasionally drop a line. Recently, I wrote a girl in South Africa. Now, I probably should be ashamed of writing her anyway... based on what her profile said:

Now, right away I should have known better. That word tipped me off regarding where she's coming from. I guess our media culture has influence even over there! But being foolhardy (and besides that, she's cute), I wrote anyway:
will you be coming to washington, d.c.? we'd love to have you here. can show you the scene, you'd really enjoy it.
She wrote back something which was even more unintelligible than the text on her profile, so I won't bother to repeat it here, especially since I never responded to it. But then I received the following today:

Honey,I am having serious crises in obtaining a
students visa because of september 11th.attack.Honey,i just came back from an interview with USA Embassy today in respect of my students Visa,Honey,guess what,I was denied Visa i cry!!!
Honey, but a close relation to my family introduced me to a top government
funtionary who works with USA Embassy who after consistent persuation and pleadings, agreed on
assisting me only on one condition.
Honey,he said he was going to collect $3500 for a students
visa to USA and since i started working and decided to
embark on this travel to the USA,i have been able to save about
$2800.I am seriously sourcing for the remaining $700 for
i cant stand loosing this uncommon chance.
Honey,please i am not compelling you to assist,but i am
only pleading with you to assist me with any available
fund.can you be of any financial assistance to me for i
will appreciate you for life.I am really stressed up
financially for now.I really want to join you soon.I love
